The Kaaba, located in Mecca, stands as the holiest site in Islam — a symbol of monotheism, unity, faith and devotion. Its history spans pre‑Islamic times, the era of the Prophets, and centuries of transformations and reconstructions.
Before the rise of Islam, the Kaaba served as a sanctuary for local tribes and was visited by pilgrims from across Arabia. According to Islamic tradition, the structure was rebuilt by Prophet Muhammad around 600 CE after damage from fire and flood; during this reconstruction he resolved a dispute among tribal elders over placing the sacred Black Stone.
With the advent of Islam, the idols that once filled the Kaaba were removed, and the shrine was restored as a centre of pure monotheistic worship. Since then, it has been repaired several times — but its spiritual significance has remained unparalleled, drawing millions of believers for pilgrimage and prayers.
